Guaranteed hours and flexible work patterns

Helping you get the balance right

Ending the day feeling completely wiped out isn’t healthy and means you have no time to spend with family and friends and do the things you enjoy. This gets worse when you’re expected to cover shifts at the last minute or are made to feel guilty when you can’t.

We arrange realistic hours that fit around your life, so you can get the balance right. And, while we may offer extra hours, we’ll never expect you to do more than you’ve agreed to. Real life isn’t all plain sailing and unexpected things happen, such as your child being ill off school, so we’ll be as flexible as we can to help you out.

Guaranteed pay

We offer Guaranteed Pay contracts so you can plan your life with greater financial certainty.

It’s the least we can do to say thanks for your commitment to us! Find out more here.

This is Jo’s story

‘It was relentless’

I worked in a care home before and I wanted to stay in care but it was so stressful in my job. I worked 12-hour shifts, 8 am to 8 pm without a break and I was completely run down and worn out.

Life outside of work was non-existent. In the evening my friends would all go out but I just wanted to come home and go straight to bed as I was so wiped out. The company I worked at was understaffed so I was always asked to work lots more hours. It was a big chain company so you feel like you’re just a robot. It was relentless.

‘Abney & Baker show real humanity’

I looked into the policies at Abney & Baker and they stood out as being really good. For me it’s not all about the money but the pay was very good. Where I was before I was on minimum wage. I saw that they had loads to offer, such as opportunities to develop and train.

The origin of Abney & Baker is important to me. It’s definitely worth reading up on how the company came about and the CEO’s story. It’s coming from somebody who recognises the importance of care and really gets it. Abney & Baker show real humanity, not like some large institutional places I’ve worked at.

‘My work-life balance is so much better’

I’ve worked with Abney & Baker for seven months now and my work-life balance so much better. I’m so much happier in myself and working here makes me want to go out and do my best for the company. I used to dread going to work before but now I really enjoy it. Where I worked before it was all or nothing so I had to sacrifice all my time.

‘I would definitely recommend Abney & Baker for anyone looking to work in care.’

Here they are really flexible and they recognise you have a life outside of work. There is an open discussion about your availability, so you find something that works for everyone. As you’re out in community it feels so much more relaxed as a job and sometimes like you’re not actually at work! If you’re asked to cover work and can’t do it for whatever reason you’re not made to feel guilty – they appreciate it’s not always possible.

I would definitely recommend A&B for anyone looking to work in care. You are treated really well and they are always there for you regardless of if you’re new or been doing it for ages
